I realised the other day that I graduated ten years ago this coming May. Ten years!! A decade! Where does the time go? In that time I have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful clients to help them lose weight and improve their health.
Having worked with hundreds of women and men to help them reach and maintain their healthy, happy weight, there are a few things I have learned along the way. Actually, I have learned a lot of things, but there are three that really stand out as being relevant for many of us.
Here are three things I have learned about weight loss...
It's not obligatory to do it all at once
Often one of the first things a new client will as me is ‘how long do you think it will take me to get down to my target weight'. I would be lying if I gave a definitive answer to this. Not because I don't know the average amount of weight someone can lose over a period of time, but because of life. I have seen clients who have consistently lost weight week on week and reached their target in one fell swoop. But that's not always the case. If you've got more than a few pounds to lose, it's ok to not do it all at once. A break might occur for a couple of weeks due to a work trip, a couple of months due to children's summer holidays, or even longer, which is often due to mindset - and that's ok. The main thing is that your end goal isn't delayed indefinitely.
Sometimes, maintaining is an achievement
This follows on nicely from my first point. Holidays, Christmas, birthdays and unexpected events all happen. During these periods, simply maintaining your weight and not gaining any can be an achievement in itself. We can be pretty hard on ourselves sometimes but I believe it's important to accept that challenges are a part of life and to acknowledge the little wins.
We are all on our own journey
The majority of my clients come to me through word of mouth. Often they have seen a friend, colleague or family member lose weight and have asked for my details. With this comes a certain degree of expectation. Perhaps that they will lose weight as fast as their friend. Or that they're going to go onto the same sort of plan I put their friend on. This is often not the case. We really are all so different and my job as a practitioner is to identify what is right for you as an individual. Of course, I take into account personal preferences and work with my clients to decide the best strategy together. It's important to acknowledge that everyone is on their own journey. Focus on yourself and doing the best you can.
