24 Jan Top Tips For Fast Weight Loss (That Is Still Healthy)
There’s a commonly held myth that for weight loss to be healthy, it has to be slow. I’m happy to tell you that’s not necessarily true. So long as you’re following a nutritionally sound eating plan, focused on reducing body fat whilst preserving muscle mass, you can lose weight quickly in a way that’s perfectly healthy.
Here are my five top tips for fast weight loss that is still healthy.
EAT PROTEIN FOR BREAKFAST
Starting your day with a starchy carbohydrate based breakfast like cereal or toast is a sure fire way to cause hunger and cravings later in the day. Basing your breakfast around protein like organic eggs or a protein smoothie will fill you up, keep you satisfied and make you much less likely to turn to unhealthy snacks later on. Here’s an article I wrote for Evening Standard with more tips on how to make your breakfast weight loss friendly.
SWAP STARCHY CARBS FOR VEG
Bread, pasta, rice and noodles can dominate our diets but eating starchy carbohydrates really encourages the body to store fat. The more you can avoid them, the better. Try swapping the starchy carbs on your plate for low carb veggies. Roasted Mediterranean vegetables are delicious whilst cauliflower rice and courgette spaghetti make great alternatives to standard rice and pasta.
SWERVE SUGAR (INCLUDING HIDDEN SUGARS)
We know that sugar makes us gain weight. We know that foods like chocolates, biscuits, cakes and sweets are high in sugar. But did you know that high levels of sugar can be found hidden in seemingly healthy foods? Fruit juices, stir-fry sauces, cereal bars… there are many examples of healthy looking foods that are secretly loaded with sugar. Make sure you always check the nutrition information for the true sugar content of foods. Cut out sugar and watch the pounds drop off.
EAT MINDFULLY
When eating, focus on your food (not on a screen) and make sure you chew your mouthful thoroughly before swallowing. This gives your body time to communicate feelings of fullness, preventing overeating. Spending a period of time keeping a food diary can also help you become more aware of exactly what you’re eating. You may be surprised just how often that ‘occasional’ biscuit or slice of cake appears!
