Is Hormone Testing Important For Weight Loss?

When it comes to reaching your health and weight loss goals, hormone testing can be enormously helpful. But knowing which ones to go for can be a minefield. So leaving it up to the experts can be the best option! DUTCH is a fantastic test that we have been using at the clinic for years. So what is the DUTCH test? And should you get one?

Need help making your plan? We’re here to help. If you looking to overcome your weight challenges, reach your ideal weight and maintain it long term, we can help. Schedule your complimentary call today to find out more.

HORMONE TESTING & WEIGHT LOSS

Hormone testing can be really important when it comes to weight loss success. Hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol significantly impact metabolism, appetite, and fat storage, and hormone imbalances can impact on weight. Testing can identify imbalances that may be sabotaging weight loss, allowing for targeted interventions through diet, exercise, and guided supplementation. Regular hormone monitoring in such cases is crucial for long-term weight management success.

WHAT IS THE DUTCH TEST?

DUTCH, which stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones, is an advanced test used to assess a wide range of hormones and their metabolites. It’s a comprehensive assessment of sex hormones (progesterone, oestrogens, and testosterone), adrenal hormones (cortisol, cortisone, and DHEA), and melatonin.

HOW ARE THE RESULTS HELPFUL?

This test shows us the levels of a wide variety of hormones. It can give insights into how high or low levels of certain hormones could be affecting your health and wellbeing and may be contributing to symptoms you’re experiencing.

Many of our clients are taking hormone replacement therapy, and this test can help to ensure that levels are being optimised through treatment. As nutritionists, we don’t prescribe hormones, however we have a network of excellent practitioners who we can refer to, if we feel that HRT might be beneficial for you.

From a nutritional perspective, there is much we can do through diet, lifestyle and supplementation, to support hormone health and help optimise hormone production and excretion.

BLOOD OR URINE TESTING?

One of the key advantages of DUTCH testing is its ability to provide a complete picture of hormone levels throughout the day. Traditional blood tests only capture a snapshot of hormone levels at a single point in time, while DUTCH testing collects multiple samples over a 24-hour period. This allows for a more comprehensive assessment of hormone fluctuations and rhythms.

That said, it can be valuable to run a DUTCH test alongside a comprehensive blood test. Many of the clients, particularly women, we work with are struggling with their weight due to suboptimal thyroid function. Thyroid hormones are not assessed using the DUTCH test so we will commonly run a DUTCH test alongside a Wellness 360 blood panel which assesses hormone levels in the blood, as well as a wide range of other health markers.

WHO IS THE DUTCH TEST FOR?

Anyone can take a DUTCH test (men as well as women), but the test is especially helpful for anyone who wants to address hormone-related health challenges. We run the test on many of our menopausal clients who are struggling with their weight. Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and mood swings can all be impacted by our hormones.

Even if you are symptom free, knowing what’s going on with your hormones is never a bad idea. I have sent off for a test kit for myself so that I have an up to date picture of my hormonal health.
