13 Feb Do Some People Get Away With Eating Anything?
If you are someone who gains weight easily, it can be easy to look at people around you who do not and feel somewhat envious. We often see clients, (typically women) who say “oh my husband / partner gets away with eating anything, it’s so unfair”. But do some people really get away with eating whatever they want?
Just because someone isn’t visibly overweight, it does not mean that their health isn’t suffering due to poor diet and lifestyle habits. Here, we’ll discuss why.
We take a personalised, expert-led approach tailored to each individual to help you overcome your weight challenges, helping you achieve your desired weight and maintaining it long term. Book your complimentary call today to find out more.
WEIGHT AND HEALTH
As a society, we have arguably come to see weight as the most significant visible determinant of health. We assume that, if someone looks slim, they must be healthy. This is simply not true.
Due to their gender, their DNA, even their gut microbiome, some people are naturally slim and appear to get away with eating anything they like. That is, until they don’t. While they may look healthy, it doesn’t mean they are healthy.
Here are just a couple of examples of ways in which someone can appear slim, yet have compromised health.
WHAT IS SKINNY FAT?
One possibility is that the person who can ‘get away with eating anything’ is ‘skinny fat’. This is a term that refers to having a higher-than-healthy percentage of body fat and a low amount of muscle mass. Usually, these people appear slim and have a BMI that would categorise them a healthy weight. But their visceral fat is higher than it should be and they are at greater risk of a number of chronic diseases.
What’s Your BMI & Why Is It Important?
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES
A lean body doesn’t necessarily equal a well-nourished one. Diets low in essential nutrients like iron, magnesium, vitamin D and omega 3 fats can lead to issues like fatigue, poor bone health, and inflammation. Nutrient deficiencies are surprisingly common, with over 5 billion people worldwide not getting enough. Read more about nutrient deficiencies and how to address them in our post: How To Tell If You’re Nutrient Deficient.
POOR GUT HEALTH
Even when they don’t result in immediate weight gain, poor diet and lifestyle habits can compromise gut health. Gut dysbiosis (essentially an unhealthy gut microbiome) can be experienced by people of all sizes. Dysbiosis can lead to bloating, poor digestion, nutrient malabsorption, and systemic inflammation.
WEIGHT GAIN AS A GIFT
Over the past two decades we have worked with a number of coaches and therapists. Several years ago, I was going through a particularly challenging situation in my life and I remember my coach saying to me “how is this a gift?”. At the time, our immediate response might be “oh **** off”. It certainly does not feel like a gift! But it might be time to rethink this response.
If you are someone who does put on weight easily, and your weight creeps up a kg or two, it’s usually a sign that you may have taken your eye off the ball with your health. Typically, it means you’re not as focussed on getting an optimal amount of sleep, putting in less effort with my workouts, or are letting more treat foods creep into your diet than is ideal. It’s an early warning sign that those who do not gain weight so easily do not have.
The fact is, people who do not visibly gain weight despite unhealthy habits are not ‘getting away with it’. And if they seem to be now, that likely won’t always be the case. Chances are they are setting themselves up for problems later down the line.
