WHAT ARE WEIGHT LOSS GUMMIES?

So-called weight loss gummies are supplements formulated to support weight loss in various ways. They might claim to suppress the appetite or boost the metabolism. They usually contain vitamins, minerals, and / or herbal extracts featuring ingredients that are thought to be effective in aiding weight loss. They’re usually brightly coloured, attractively packages and heavily marketed. Many people find that taking a sweet-like supplement is more appealing than swallowing a tablet or capsule. However, whether they actually deliver on their promises is another matter.

DO THEY WORK?

If taking a weight loss gummy to overcome your weight struggles sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. As qualified nutritionists who specialise in weight loss, we know that no supplement is a substitute for making meaningful, long-lasting changes to your nutrition, lifestyle and mindset. While some supplements can be a valuable addition to your diet, most of the best ones don’t come in gummy form.

An important factor to consider is what else is in your gummy in addition to the active ingredient. Many gummy supplements contain sugar which is not supportive of weight loss or health in general. If you’re considering taking a gummy supplement, always check the full ingredients list and ensure it doesn’t contain sugar.

You will also want to make sure that your gummy contains a therapeutic dose of its active ingredient. Below we’ll take a look at common active ingredients found in weight loss gummies, some of which have been shown to have modest effects at promoting fat loss.

HOW DO WEIGHT LOSS GUMMIES WORK?

The mechanism of action of weight loss gummies varies depending on the ingredients they contain. For example, some gummies may be effective at delivering the body a promised supplement of a particular ingredient, however, there are no studies around the general efficacy of weight loss gummies. Since weight loss success largely dependent on nutrition and lifestyle management, it’s worth considering whether adding in what your body may see as ‘sweets’ is a good idea. 

WHAT ARE THE KEY INGREDIENTS?

Weight loss gummies generally contain a variety of ingredients, each purported to contribute to weight loss. Gummies may contain one key ingredient or be a blend of several. The main added ingredients are as follows: 

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Apple cider vinegar is believed to aid weight loss by helping the body burn fat for increased energy levels, reducing fat accumulation, curbing cravings, and supporting a low-calorie diet. COFFEA ROBUSTA EXTRACT

Coffea robusta extract, derived from green coffee beans, is known for its potential to boost metabolism and promote fat burning. Studies suggest that it may assist in weight loss by increasing energy expenditure and aiding in the breakdown of fats.

GREEN TEA

Green tea is a popular ingredient in weight loss supplements, including gummies, due to its antioxidant properties and potential to enhance metabolism. KETONES

Ketones are compounds that can be used by the body for energy production. In weight loss gummies, ketones can be included to mimic the effects of a ketogenic diet, potentially promoting fat burning and aiding in weight loss. However, there is little evidence that this is effective. 

GARCINIA CAMBOGIA

Garcinia cambogia is a tropical fruit extract containing hydroxycitric acid (HCA). It is believed to inhibit an enzyme that helps the body store fat. Studies suggest that it may also suppress appetite and support weight loss efforts.

CAFFEINE

Caffeine is another common ingredient in weight loss gummies due to its stimulant properties that can increase metabolism and promote fat burning. It may also enhance exercise performance and aid in weight management. Read more about caffeine and weight loss in our guide.

It’s worth remembering that while supplements typically state the ingredients and NRV (recommended daily intake), it is not guaranteed that these nutrients will be absorbed, and not all supplements are backed by clinical studies, in fact, most aren’t. You should also be aware of the added ingredients in supplements, especially gummies, which often contain added sugar and may be doing more harm than good, especially if weight loss is your goal.

She developed an interest in nutrition whilst volunteering for an organisation that provides cooking and nutrition education to children and families.

Sarah spent a large part of her teens and 20’s as a professional dancer battling with orthorexia and an unhealthy relationship with food and her body. This created a desire to understand the human body more so she could finally cut through the confusion and end the cycle of yoyo dieting. This fuelled her passion to help other women do the same.

 

Sarah specialises in supporting women who are struggling to lose weight due to underlying health issues. She’s helped many women manage their weight during and after the menopause, as well as clients with thyroid disease and immune system dysfunction. Sarah loves food and sharing healthy recipes with her clients. Her aim is to ensure that clients don’t feel deprived and instead, achieve their weight loss and health goals in a positive and sustainable way.

Ania is a firm believer that improving your health and losing weight should be a positive, empowering journey, not one centred around deprivation.

 

After being diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions in her twenties, Ania spent several years educating herself on the power of food and nutrition. She put it all into practise and changed her diet and lifestyle, reversing her endometriosis and thyroid disease. After experiencing such a significant improvement in her health, Ania had a big desire to help others. She embarked on a four year journey to study nutrition, graduating from the Institute for Optimum Nutrition with distinction.
