26 Feb How To Tell If You’re Nutrient Deficient
Whether or not you’re trying to lose weight, the primary focus of your diet should be ensuring your body has all the nutrients it needs. A new study published in The Lancet revealed that over 5 billion people worldwide aren’t getting enough essential nutrients from their diet. But how can you tell if you’re nutrient deficient? And if you are, what should you do about it?
We are a team of qualified nutritionists specialising in weight loss. If you’d like to hear how we can help you optimise your health and weight, schedule your complimentary call today to find out more.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES?
According to the study, 68% don’t get enough iodine, 67% vitamin E, 66% calcium, 65% iron, and over 50% riboflavin, folate, and vitamin C. Nutrient deficiencies don’t just leave people feeling fatigued, they can significantly impact brain function, immunity, longevity and many other aspects of health.
There are numerous causes: declining soil quality means that even healthy, whole foods contain fewer nutrients than they did generations ago. Environmental toxins decrease nutrient absorption, while stress increases our needs. Meanwhile, nutrient-devoid, ultra-processed foods make up 60% of the average diet.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
If you’re keen to optimise your nutrient levels, there are several things you can do.
TESTING
A simple blood test can give insights into your current nutrient status and whether there’s anything you’re deficient in. Our team regularly runs comprehensive blood work for our clients to assess a range of different health markers, including levels of key nutrients.
The blood test we recommend most often assesses 58 markers including nutrients like vitamin D, B12, folate, iron, magnesium and omegas 3 and 6. If you’d like us to organise this test for you, simply contact us to book in today. The cost is £249 plus a blood draw fee of around £45, depending on your location.
DIET OPTIMISATION
We recommend taking a ‘food first’ approach to nutrition. Instead of immediately jumping to supplements, we want to try and get as much nutrition from our food as possible. Structure meals around whole foods, eat balanced meals, and include a variety of different foods in your diet. Eliminating / minimising ultra processed food is also key. Here’s an article explaining how to spot an ultra-processed food.
SUPPLEMENTING
Sadly, it’s very difficult to consume an optimal amount of all vital nutrients, even if our diet is ideal, and as qualified nutritionists, even our diets aren’t perfect all of the time.
If you’re not tailoring your supplement intake based on the results of a testing your nutrient levels, or working with a nutritionist who can give you a personalised plan, here are two supplements we recommend you consider taking.
- A comprehensive multi nutrient such as Good Green Vitality from NuZest
- A high strength omega 3 like Life & Soul from Bare Biology
These are two of the most popular supplements we recommend to our clients. Using the affiliate links above will give you 10% off these products, and anything else you purchase, at the checkout.
