24 Aug New Evidence That Soup And Shake Diets Work
A new study has provided further evidence that the soup and shake diet really do work when it comes to weight loss and reversal of type 2 diabetes. The NHS’s ‘soup and shake’ diet programme has shown remarkable success in helping individuals with type 2 diabetes achieve remission. According to a recent study, nearly one-third of participants in the initiative successfully reversed their condition. So what did this study show? And what evidence is there to prove that soup and shake diets are effective for weight loss?

SOUP AND SHAKE DIETS WORK: THE LATEST STUDY
A new study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology investigated the effectiveness of the NHS soup and shake meal replacement programme for adults with type 2 diabetes in the UK. The researchers conducted a randomised controlled trial involving 1,162 participants from 17 primary care practices across England.
After 12 months, the study found that participants in the intervention group experienced a significant reduction in HbA1c levels compared to the control group. Specifically, the mean difference in HbA1c between the groups was -2.8 mmol/mol (-0.26%), favouring the intervention group. This improvement in glycemic control is considered clinically meaningful and could potentially lead to reduced risks of diabetes-related complications.
The primary outcome was remission of type 2 diabetes at 12 months for those following TDR (total diet replacement). Secondary outcomes included percentage and absolute changes in bodyweight, proportions achieving at least 10% and 15% weight loss, programme completion rates, and changes in HbA1c levels between referral and the most recent test.
WHAT ARE THE EXPERTS SAYING?
Dr Clare Hambling, NHS England’s national clinical director for diabetes and obesity said: “It’s brilliant that these findings show a large number of those who completed [the programme] have seen life-changing benefits including major weight loss and type 2 diabetes remission. We know obesity is one of the biggest threats to health in the UK and will be one of the biggest and most costly challenges for health systems globally, so seeing such encouraging outcomes from our programme shows that obesity can be tackled head-on, and we’re looking forward to scoping any further expansion to this programme in due course.”
Dr Elizabeth Robertson, the director of research at Diabetes UK said: “These latest findings add to the real world evidence that the NHS England type 2 diabetes path to remission programme can help thousands of people living with type 2 diabetes on their weight loss and remission journey, which we know is tough and having support is critical. We hope to see even more people benefiting in years to come and an increase in referrals to the programme especially for people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and in younger people where the impact of type 2 diabetes and remission from it is greatest.”
IS THERE MORE EVIDENCE THAT THE SOUP & SHAKE DIETS WORK?
Yes, there is. A study of 278 people across 10 GP practices in Oxfordshire saw half the participants following a meal replacement programme of soups and shakes for eight weeks. This diet saw them limiting their daily calorie intake to 810kcal per day for eight weeks, after which other foods were gradually reintroduced over four weeks. These participants saw a trained counsellor every week for 24 weeks, to help them stick to the diet plan and keep the weight off after the meal replacement plan finished. The remaining participants in the study followed the usual weight management advice and support from their GP.
Throughout the study, participants following the meal replacement plan lost more weight than those in the control group. One year on, they had lost on average 1st 9lb (10.7kg). This is compared with half a stone (3.1kg) for those in the usual weight loss group. The meal replacement programme group also showed noticeable improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol. Type-2 diabetes patients in the group were also able to reduce their medication (although the condition was not reversed).
Prof Paul Aveyard, study author, GP and professor of behavioural medicine at the University of Oxford said the programme was an “effective intervention which GPs can confidently recommend, knowing that it leads to sustainable weight loss and lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes”.
