08 Mar The Truth About Toxic Cosmetics
With our skin absorbing a significant portion of what we apply to it, opting for non-toxic cosmetics is an important consideration for long-term health.
Many conventional skincare and makeup products contain endocrine disruptors, allergens, and potentially carcinogenic ingredients. Some of these chemicals even act as obesogens and could be contributing to your weight challenges.
So how do you identify the products you should include or eliminate from your daily routine? In this article we’ll take a look at the practical steps you can take to reduce the toxic burden your cosmetics are having on your body. Small swaps can make a big difference to your overall toxic load.
We are a team of qualified, experienced nutritionists who specialise in weight loss. We believe in an approach to weight management and health optimisation that goes beyond what you eat and whether you exercise. Book your complimentary call today to find out how we can help you.
WHAT IS THE SKIN DEEP DATABASE?
The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database is a fantastic tool for identifying whether or not cosmetics contain potentially harmful ingredients. You can search for your favourite cosmetics and find out whether they contain ingredients that have the potential to compromise your health. When digging deeper into popular skincare brands, words like ‘organ toxicity’ ‘endocrine disruption’ and ‘bioaccumulation’ come up frequently, so it’s worth checking how your go-to products compare.
We all want products that make our skin look the best it can, but also that do not accumulate in the body and cause it harm. In EWG’s database, products are assigned a ‘hazard score’ from 1-10, 1 being the best and 10 being the worst. Choosing low scoring products can help you minimise your toxic load.
Here are some of our favourite low-scoring discoveries.
SKINCARE
One cosmeceutical brand that delivers on results but has relatively low hazard scores is Medik8. It’s possible to replace all products in your daily skincare regime with topicals that score 3 or below. Are all of their products perfect? No. But according to the EWG they’re considerably less toxic than other popular cosmeceutical brands. Here’s more information on Medik8’s ingredients ethos. We recommend searching the EWG database yourself and make the best choices for you.
HAIR AND BODY
As for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand wash, and soap, our go-to brand is Faith In Nature. Their products deliver on results and non-toxic ingredients, and they are more widely available than ever.
MAKEUP
Jane Iredale is a mineral-based makeup that uses organic ingredients and has low EWG scores. Many the brands that EWG recommend are only available in the US, including WellPeople which may be a good option if you’re State-side.
ALL-ROUND HEALTHY LIVING
Making choices that support our health goes beyond just what we eat, whether we exercise and how well we sleep. What we put on our skin gets absorbed into our body so using non-toxic cosmetics is an important consideration too. We have no commercial affiliation with any of the above brands, we just hope that by sharing what we’ve discovered it will help you make healthier choices too.
