HOW DOES MOUNJARO WORK?
Firstly, let’s discuss how Mounjaro affects the body. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a medication that mimics two natural hormones in the body: GLP-1 and GIP. Firstly, let’s discuss how Mounjaro (tirzepatide) affects the body. Mounjaro is a medication that mimics the actions of two natural hormones: GLP 1 and GIP. It stimulates insulin production from the pancreas and reduces glucagon secretion, helping regulate blood sugar levels. It also slows gastric emptying, keeping food in the stomach for longer which helps regulate appetite and food intake. Together, these effects help control blood glucose levels and promote weight loss.
WHEN SHOULD YOU STOP TAKING MOUNJARO?
The decision to stop taking Mounjaro should ideally be made in consultation with your doctor or other medical prescriber. Some of the most common reasons to discontinue Mounjaro include achieving goal weight, experiencing severe side effects, expense, family planning or medical complications. For some people, Mounjaro and similar medications could be a long-term treatment, if your doctor deems this necessary, particularly for individuals with diabetes.
The appetite-suppressing effects of the drugs will not outlast the medication itself.
DO YOU PUT WEIGHT BACK ON WHEN YOU STOP TAKING MOUNJARO?
Research indicates that weight regain is common when discontinuing Mounjaro. A study published in the BMJ reviewed 37 studies and found that cessation of weight management medication is followed by rapid weight regain and reversal of beneficial effects on cardiometabolic markers. They concluded that tese findings suggest caution in short term use of these drugs without a more comprehensive approach to weight management.
Long term weight loss results are not guaranteed once you come off Mounjaro, as once you stop taking the drugs, the effects stop too.
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN POST-WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS?
There are a number of strategies that can help you to continue your weight loss success after you stop taking a medication like Mounjaro.
DIET
The best (and only) way to ensure long-term success when it comes to weight management is to make positive changes to your diet. Cutting down on ultra-processed foods and building meals around healthy proteins, seasonal vegetables and healthy fats is a good start, but working with a qualified nutritionist can help you to find a diet that works for your individual needs.
HEALTH OPTIMISATION
As well improving your diet in a way that is enjoyable and sustainable, working with a nutritionist can help you to identify underlying health issues that may be compromising your weight management. Testing can help to identify issues like hypothyroidism or hormone imbalanced, and get clear on the factors that are impacting your weight.
EXERCISE
Implementing an exercise routine is important for supporting muscle mass, which is particularly important after coming off weight loss medication. Focus on strength training in particular, rather than overdoing it with cardio, if you are not currently exercising. Finding something that works for you, and that you ideally enjoy, is key to making it stick long term.

MONITOR YOUR WEIGHT
It’s also important to make sure you monitor your weight so that you can address weight regain quickly if it does occur. Many people find that weighing once a week is a optimal. Aim to keep weight regain to a minimum, and know that if you do gain a little, weight loss injections are not the only solution!
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU COME OFF MOUNJARO?
When discontinuing Mounjaro, several changes may occur. These can include increased appetite (the return of hunger), changes in blood sugar levels, and weight fluctuations. The good news is that optimising your diet, your health and your exercise regime, can have a positive impact on helping you maintain weight loss, regulate blood sugar levels and ensure your appetite is manageable. Some people also find that their side effects subside and that bowel movements become more regular as food intake increases.
CAN YOU TAKE BREAKS FROM MOUNJARO?
The concept of taking breaks from Mounjaro, also known as “drug holidays,” is not well-studied, and current guidelines do not recommend this practice. Mounjaro is designed for continuous use. Stopping and starting the drug may lead to blood sugar fluctuations, weight regain and increased risk of side effects when you restart the drug.
