HALF OF ADULTS HAVE PUT OFF WEIGHT LOSS
A recent survey commissioned by Slimming World has uncovered that 50% of UK adults have postponed attempts to lose weight. Even more concerning, 22% of respondents admitted to delaying their weight loss efforts for three years or more. This procrastination is not without consequences, as many report that the delay has negatively impacted their health and even led to further weight gain.

WHAT IMPACT DOES DELAYING WEIGHT LOSS HAVE?
The longer obesity persists, the higher the risk of developing related health issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Whatsmore, children living with obesity are approximately five times more likely to become adults living with obesity, perpetuating the cycle.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Despite putting it off, the desire to lose weight remains strong among UK adults. The survey found that 43% of respondents are unhappy with their size, and a significant 70% express a desire to improve their health. However, there’s a clear disconnect between intention and action, with 42% of adults thinking about losing weight at least once a week without taking concrete steps.
WHAT STOPS PEOPLE STARTING?
Reasons for delaying are complex and vary from one person to the next. Many people (38%) report waiting for a ‘final straw’ before deciding to take action. Psychological factors play a crucial role, with fear of failure and comfort with familiar habits contributing to procrastination. In short: many find it too hard to go it alone.
ARE WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS THE ANSWER?
While weight loss drugs have gained significant attention recently, they are not without controversy. The survey revealed that 48% of UK adults would not consider using medication or weight loss drugs. Concerns include potential side effects (32%), uncertainty about the substances involved (23%), and doubts about long-term efficacy (21%). NHS England’s medical director, Professor Stephen Powis, has expressed alarm at reports of people using these drugs as a “quick fix” without proper medical supervision.
