10 Jul What Are The Healthiest Things To Order On Deliveroo?
Have you ever wondered what nutritionists order on Deliveroo? In an era where convenience often trumps nutrition, the rise of food delivery services has left many people questioning whether they can maintain a balanced diet while still enjoying the ease of takeaway. So is it possible to indulge in delivered meals without compromising your health, or derailing your diet?
As a team of nutritionists, we work with our clients to ensure they can maintain a healthy diet despite the constraints of modern life. Here, we’ll talk you through how to navigate the world of food delivery to satisfy both your taste buds and nutritional needs.
CAN YOU ORDER A TAKEAWAY WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Yes, you can. There’s no need to deprive yourself of the odd takeaway when you’re trying to reach your ideal weight. But like any area of nutrition, it’s about making smart choices and keeping treats for special occasions. Remember that however ‘healthy’ a meal appears to be on a takeaway app, unless you’re making the meal yourself at home, you don’t know exactly how it’s been prepared or the ingredients that have been used. For this reason it’s best to use takeaway apps like Deliveroo sparingly, rather than relying on them for a significant proportion of your meals.
CAN YOU GET A BALANCED DIET THROUGH TAKEAWAYS?
Not easily. I worked with a Women’s Health editor on a month-long experiment of eating exclusively takeaways from Deliveroo to explore just that: whether it’s possible to find healthy takeaway options. The experience revealed an increasing availability of nutritious choices on delivery apps, with calorie labelling proving helpful for informed decision-making. However, while healthy looking meals, juices and smoothies are available, they require careful selection. The experiment also highlighted that it’s easier to find healthy options for some meals than others. Breakfast takeaways generally disappointed, with fewer healthy options available. And of course, where in the country you’re based will make dictate what options are available to you. Central London has significantly more health options available when compared with more remote, rural locations.
WHY ARE TAKEAWAYS BAD FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Aside from the fact that it is hard to tell exactly what is going into your takeaway, delivery meals often rely on high levels of sugar, refined carbohydrates and deep fried foods, which are quick to prepare and enhance flavour, encouraging repeat orders. As I told a Guardian journalist for this article on the dangers of eating too many takeaways, major food companies invest significantly in developing irresistible ingredient combinations that drive overconsumption. Therefore, it’s far easier to overindulge in ultra-processed foods like pizzas from big chain restaurants, compared to a plate of vegetables or salad.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTHIEST RESTAURANTS ON DELIVEROO?
Obviously the range of restaurants available on your local takeaway app will differ by region. If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with a big range of options, some of the restaurants on the app that have healthier options include: Sushi Gourmet, Itsu, Panku, Pret, LEON, Joe & The Juice, Wasabi, Pho, PRESS, Island Poké, Wahaca, Le Pain Quotidien, and Kokoro.
WHAT THE MOST UNHEALTHY TAKEAWAY OPTIONS?
The most unhealthy takeaways include heavily processed pizzas, deep-fried foods (think prawn crackers, poppadoms and chips), and dishes with large quantities of sugar. It’s not always easy to tell that a dish is high in sugar when ingredients lists and nutrition information aren’t provided. Even savoury dishes, such as those containing hidden sugar in sauces, can be an issue. Fast food chains and takeaways that rely on processed, factory-farmed meats which we would never recommend. Meals high in sugar, such as some fruit-based juices or smoothies, can be deceptively unhealthy as well. Of course, you don’t have to give up on burgers or pizzas altogether, forever, but save them for occasional treats rather than a weekly takeaway order. And when you do, opt for a sourdough pizza with high quality toppings rather than Dominoes or similar.
WHAT NUTRITIONISTS ORDER ON DELIVEROO
Have you ever wondered what nutritionists order from Deliveroo? We asked our team about their favourite take aways. There are some great healthy options now available for delivery if you’re looking for an easy, nutritious meal. But you’ll see that like most people, we enjoy a curry or a burger too! Here is what our team of nutritionists order from Deliveroo.
ANIA
‘My favourite is Pho Vietnamese and their Spicy Green Noodle Soup. I also love Thai food especially Green Curry and Tom Yum.’
INNA
‘I don’t live in London so I don’t have access to many of the amazing healthy options Londoners do. The limited Chinese and Indian options contain high quantities of unhealthy fats, sugars and undesirable additives like MSG so I tend to avoid them.’
KIM
‘Poké is my Deliveroo go-to for a fresh, healthy and filling clinic day lunch. I love a good quality curry (my go-to is Holy Cow) or a Lebanese mezze when I have friends or family over.’
STEPHANIE
‘I have recently been enjoying Vietnamese or Sushi from Deliveroo. I particularly love traditional summer rolls with fresh water prawns and grilled eggplant and crispy bean curd. Otherwise, it’s a sashimi set with a delicious seaweed salad.’
